> Below are two thermostats out of an outboard motor. The left one looks normal however the right one is in the stuck open position which it should not be that way unless the engine is allready warmed up!
>
> Folks it's critical that the engine run at operating temperatures of around 135 degrees. Cold running engines can lead to carbon build up on valves and rings. Note that thermostats run in saltwater as well!
>
> Everyone's engine you be checked annually and my recommendation is to replace thermostats at a minimum of every two years. The problem is that most all engines have an overheat alarm however there is nothing to let you know the motor is running cold. Bottom line it's a maintenance item that needs checking regularly. We see a lot of stuck up open thermostats out in the field.
