It's Fall / Winterization time

Can you believe that it is already the first of November? Wow what a quick September and October. Here in the Northern Neck you know its fall when all of a sudden it is Oyster Festival weekend!  Yes that means Thanksgiving and Christmas are just around the corner. It also signals the time of year when folks have to think about putting away their boats. Many of us will continue to enjoy the fall season, whether it be cruising, fishing, enjoying the foliage or just taking a leisurely cruise out on the rivers and bay! Rock Fisherman will hopefully have a bountiful season as the water cools and the fish get into a feeding frenzy.

Now is the time to take some preventive measures to insure your investment makes it thru the cold weather months.  Those of you who are finished using your boat now is the time to do the winterization before freezing temperatures occur.  Thats right BEFOR . Both outboards and inboard outboards need to be winterized to prepare them for sitting extended periods of time and in the case of inboard / outboards it is imperative that this be done as they hold water and can freeze and crack. I cannot stress how important this is. In addition to winterizing engines it is also necessary to winterize fresh water systems, heads, wash down pumps, air conditions and heaters. If these components freeze and burst it means big headaches down the road alone with unnecessary expenses. All of this can be avoided.

If you have any questions regarding winterization of your watercraft please do not hesitate to call us. We are more than happy to give you advice and assist with the care of your rig. We are professionals who have been doing this right here in one location for over 50 years! We treat  your boat the way we take care of our own. We consider it a privilege in taking care of your boat!  Do not hesitate to call our service department. 804-443-2573

FW: Prepping for bottom paint

Garrett's Marina crew prepping the bottom for a coat of anti-fouling
paint. Like all painting, the most important part is the prepping.
This is crucial to the paint adhering properly. It is a very labor
intensive process the first time a boat is getting bottom painted.

The steps are as follows:
1. Mark water line with full tank of fuel
2. De wax the bottom to rid it of all mold wax
3. Sand the entire bottom with a dual action sander to (this is the
hardest part and can not be avoided)
4. Wash the bottom to make it dust free
5. Apply two coats of epoxy primer
6. Apply two coats of antifouling paint.

By taking the above action you will get a bottom paint job that will
last for years to come. It must be done RIGHT THE FIRST TIME.

Freshwater Flush Your Outboard

Most of us take good care of our marine equipment. We wash and wax our boats and outboards, change the oil and oil filter regularly, and replace the fuel filters, but what about your outboard's cooling system. Unfortunately, it is often overlooked in a maintenance regimen. During the course of normal use, the water pump can ingest mud, sand, and silt, which then flows through the engine. Marine growth can also occur behind the inlet screens interrupting the flow of water to the engine. Over time, debris can accumulate in the outboard's cooling passages. This build up can damage the water pump's rubber impeller and plastic housing. Eventually, the buildup can also restrict the amount of water available to the engine resulting in poor cooling, which will damage the engine. It may even promote corrosion in the exhaust system because increased engine temperatures— along with the effects of using ethanol blended fuels—can cause increased exhaust temperatures. Read more about fresh water flushing your outboard to prolong the life of the engine.

Larry Allen's new custom Cobia 21

Ask anybody Larry Allen knows fishing ! Mr. Allen is an avid in shore angler with a reputation of being able to catch speckled trout ! He was so impressed with the 21 Bay Cobia that once he found out Garrett's Marina was a new dealer for them in the state he headed on over to discuss it with owner / salesman Louis Muse. Louis was able to work with him and the factory to customize the rig just the way Larry wanted it. As an avid angler everything had to be just right and when you are spending over 40K you cannot blame him. Mr. Allen was most appreciative of how Cobia handled the entire process from start to finish. It did take some persuasion to do some of the things he wanted done but through a collective effort of Louis and the factory Mr. Allen was well pleased with the end result. Garrett's Marina was proud to be able to offer our service and expertise to another fine customer. It was a privilege to handle Mr. Allen's request and purchase, Louis said. Many thanks to him and our many loyal customers !
